Senior Management Team

Philip Gayle

I have worked within health and social care for over 25 years and specifically the mental health field for over 12 years and prior to this he worked extensively in the housing and substance misuse sector. My formal and academic journey extends from a qualified counsellor to being awarded a MSc in Healthcare Policy Management with Commissioning Specialism.

A Chief Executive and consultant having extensive knowledge, skills and commitment within the health, social care and housing sector. I possess specific skills and the ability to lead, empower and enable the workforce to embrace the vision of his organisation. I have gained wide-spread knowledge around Primary Care health services and housing projects. I have held several board positions within the NHS and currently I am the chair of Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. I have led on numerous business development initiatives and transformation project management.

Gaynor Brooke

With over 30 years’ experience in management and leadership primarily working in both the criminal justice and health sector. I received a BA (Hons) First in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Wolverhampton and use my specific skill set to develop and deliver services for vulnerable and at-risk service user groups. I specialise in business development, change management and charity governance.

Jade McMillan

With over 15 years of experience in the health and social care sector, I have developed a deep-rooted passion for supporting and empowering individuals to live fulfilling lives. I have been fortunate to grow my career with Servol, starting as a Registered Care Manager and progressing to my current role as Head of Operations.

Throughout my journey, I have remained committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care and leading teams with compassion and integrity. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the positive outcomes we help achieve for the people we support. I take great pride in fostering a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, and empathy across all levels of service delivery.

Stafford Cruse

I am a qualified accountant with a broad range of experience across, charity, public and private sectors. Using a pragmatic and collaborative approach, I have a strong track record of leading teams, implementing systems, and business partnering. I am passionate about continuous improvement and achieving great outcomes for Servol and the people we support.

Trustees

George Branch

George has been Board Chair for Servol for the past 3 years. An experienced senior manager who has worked in criminal justice and health sectors for over 30 years. He is currently an Assistant Chief Officer with the Probation Service with responsibility for the delivery of probation services, managing staff and working with statutory partners to protect the public.  He is passionate about disproportionality in health and criminal justice with a strong interest in ensuring mental health services meet the needs of local communities. He is an avid promoter of physical activities for health and well-being and has excelled at basketball to international level as well as mentoring and coaching at risk young people. He has recently taken up golf as his next sporting challenge. George is married with 4 children and enjoys family holidays abroad and in the UK. 

Ant Howell

Anthony is a highly skilled and experienced marketing and communications professional, with over twenty-five years’ experience in the industry and a proven track record of achievement.

In brief, he has have worked with and for some of the biggest brands in the world – Jaguar Cars, British Airways, British Gas and Scottish Widows and with a host of SME’s throughout the UK, across multiple market sectors.

Anthony has a wealth of experience in leadership, management, business development and organisational cultural change, alongside specific marketing and communications talent and is a valuable asset to any business.

With extensive experience of the public sector, working with national Governments, local authorities, the NHS, housing and regeneration organisations, social enterprises and educational establishments, on a variety of business, marketing and communications strategies, approaches and campaigns.

Anthony has also worked on and with boards, trusts and charitable committees, mentored at universities and occupied voluntary roles.

Outside of work, Anthony is a keen runner, tennis and golf player, who enjoys the company of good friends and good food.

Robin Smith

Robin is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA) who was educated in Guernsey and studied accountancy at Bristol Polytechnic and Derby University. He completed his professional training with Deloitte, Haskins & Sells in London. He has held various board positions over 35 years both at Managing Director and Finance Director level with Financial Services organisations. He has since then been the Group Finance Director for Nerine with board appointments on its principal Guernsey based operating subsidiaries including its fiduciary and fund administration companies. The Nerine Group was acquired by the PraxisIFM Group on 6 December 2018 and Mr Smith retains his responsibilities with regard to Nerine subsidiaries as well as a Directorship with PraxisIFM Treasury Services Limited. He is also a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

He has considerable experience from these roles which at various times, has given him responsibility for a wide range of functions beyond the obvious group financial reporting role being, compliance, fund accounting, operations, information technology, company secretarial and personnel.

Val Taylor

Val is a long-standing member of the Servol Board of Trustees and is Director of Corporate Services & Finance of the Open College Network. The role at Open College Network comprises being part of a senior executive team that is responsible for the management and accountability of organisational strategy, development and operations. Val develops strategic objectives for the organisation, working in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and fellow directors and oversees the effective delivery of organisational development, Human Resources, Finance and IT.

With expertise that also covers business development, learning and development and bid writing, Val can offer a wide remit of advice and direction to the Servol Community Services Board. Val is also proudly committed to a number of community projects, CICs and charities that are close to her heart. Over a number of years, Val has secured over £7m in funding for various projects.

Laura Found

Laura Found has worked within the charity sector for over 15 years. Since starting her first role as a frontline delivery worker, she has held several senior operational roles managing regional employability, resettlement and other wellbeing services. In 2014 Laura moved into bid management, utilising her operational experience to secure multi-million pound government contracts in the areas of supported accommodation, probation, prison education, and community capital projects. Laura is passionate about creating social change for marginalised and excluded individuals, challenging unfair and unhelpful perceptions around mental wellbeing, mental health and homelessness and improving the lives of individuals who face multiple and complex barriers to accessing a fair future.

Laura has volunteered as a Trustee with Servol since 2015, taking a short maternity break between her first and second Trustee term’s. A keen runner and London Marathon finisher, Laura lives in Staffordshire with her husband, two young sons and hamster.

Avril Grant

Avril is a business owner, self-empowerment coach and a motivation speaker, aimed at helping people unlock their potential. Avril owns her own business called A-vision. As a self-empowerment performance coach, Avril inspires people towards positive behavioural change so they may achieve their best performance. Her robust belief in the potential of all people and in the importance of self-belief also has led her to work within the Criminal Justice Sector in partnership with Staffordshire West Midlands Community Rehabilitation Company, Pertemps People Development Group, APM, Catch22, Milton Keynes College, National Career Service and Ixion Holdings, leading participants to along the road to desistence and to achieve long term career success.


Avril has also delivered in schools, community groups, to the unemployed and those in the corporate world well along in their careers who want satisfaction from their working lives. Attending her workshops and accredited programmes inspires others to believe in themselves, overcome fears and to pluck up the courage to improve personal performance and turn their dreams into reality.

Ken Jackson

Ken was a Registered Mental Health Nurse who has worked in a number of mental health services across Birmingham and the Black Country. He worked for North Birmingham Mental Health trust at the time Home Treatment, Assertive Outreach and Community mental health teams were developed moving away from the institutional care delivered in large mental health hospitals. He has led community mental health services at an operational director level and in particularly worked closely with General Practitioners to develop mental health services in Primary Care.

He has a strong commitment to improving mental health services to communities.

Rocco Zitola

Now retired. Rocco was previously Head of Corporate Services and Company Secretary for a social justice charity for 36 years. He has a legal/contract background with areas of particular interest including good governance, environmental, risk management, health and safety, audit and assurance, and safeguarding.

Rocco champions the important role that charities continue to play to create a fairer society and the provision of support to service users recognising this is only possible because of the skills, commitment, and dedication of its staff.

Our History

Established in 1979, our aim was to promote a better understanding amongst professionals and mainstream organisations in the UK of cultural and social issues affecting the mental well-being of black minority and ethnic people (BME), and to change negative perceptions in the BME communities about mental ill health.

Today, we offer individualised care and support for anyone diagnosed with a mental illness, irrespective of their ethnicity or cultural background. Our ultimate goal is to support individuals’ recovery journey by providing vital support to enable them to fulfil their aspirations.
